New Stage Theatre – Jackson Mississippi announces its spring acting class schedule for children, teens and adults. The Spring Session begins March 14 and runs through May 9, 2011. New Stage Theatre, in its 45th season, is the Jackson area’s only professional theatre. Classes are available from 1st grade through adults. The Teen Acting class, for grades 7-12, Spring Session meets on Monday nights from 5:30pm-7:00pm. The first class session will be March 14, and it will run every Monday evening through May 9. The cost of this session is $150.
The emphasis on the spring Teen Acting class is Creating a Character. The actors will focus on scene work and textual analysis, helping the students create a character they will showcase in a performance at the end of the 8 week session. New Stage will conduct teen classes regularly throughout the school year, with a goal of performing a full length play.
The Spring Session for 1st through 6th grade will focus on Developing Character. This series will use improvisation and dramatic exercises to give the students a better understanding of how an actor uses their body, voice and situation to create a character, culminating in a performance at the end of the last class day. 1st through 3rd grades will meet on Saturday mornings, March 19 through April 23 from 9am to 10:30am. 4th-6th grades will meet on Saturday mornings March 19 through April 23 from 10:30am to 12pm. The cost of each of these sessions is $100.
Classes for 1st-6th grade will be taught by the New Stage Theatre Professional Acting Intern Company comprised of Sydney Blackwell, Deejay Gray, Lashunda Thomas and Tyree Walker. The teen classes for 7th-12th grade will be taught by Education Director Chris Roebuck.
The education department at New Stage Theatre strives to equip young people interested in theatre with the opportunity to develop and strengthen their acting skills, in a professional environment, taught by educated and experienced theatre veterans. The emphasis of these classes is on the progression of theatrical skill, so that participants in the classes continue to enhance their skills and grow as actors.
